About This Game Dust and Salt is a text-based narrative adventure with a pinch of turn-based tactical battles which has you as the main hero leading your troops in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world. When his father is murdered and his village burned to the ground, a young warrior swears vengeance. He has to choose between force or diplomacy to forge new alliances and subdue his enemies. Will he get rid of the oppressors of this world or become an oppressor himself? The game consists of a story text, a world map, and a tactical combat layer. On the world map you can choose to travel to different locations. The story text builds around the constant choices you make. Once you engage in battle the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as turn-based combat. Enjoy the vivid writings by the quill of the author Sycamore Bright.Story is king. Rich, non-linear story that reminds of D&D with a "flair of battle". We’d describe it as a choose-your-own-adventure book that meets an RPG.Tactical combats. This is not checkers, this is a grown-up combat simulation. Send your light-armored infantry, the Nameless Wolves, through the woods into the back of the enemy while your armored, hammer-wielding Nameless Bears stall the enemy attack.Decisions matter. The narrative branches based on your choices. Your actions define and shape the world you experience.Character development. Are your decisions black, white or gray? Will they lead to a better future for the Sin Lands or will you turn into a usurper?Memorable personalities. Stand up to the cunning Lords of the Sin Lands in well-written interactive dialogues.Art that gives more life to the whole story. Zoom-in on the world map and experience the detail of the artistic work. You don’t pick abstract skills. Instead the choices you make at the beginning of the game define what abilities your character will learn. Featuring a gorgeous Nordic soundtrack by acclaimed artist Mike Olsen a.k.a. The main storyline is decent, however I mostly enjoyed negotiating with the different people in the world of the game. Having only an autosave was not a huge problem for me, I used it two or three times in the whole game and it often made me stop and think about the choice I need to make. The main part of the game consists of reading a text and selecting one of several choices. It plays similarly to "80 days" and "Sorcery!" as it uses Inkle's scripting language. Having a map, on which you can move to visit the different places of the world brings a nice diversity to the gameplay. I did not like the tactical combats a lot, as I am not a big fan of them in general. I often had to replay a battle several times to finish it with a satisfactory result, as it was not clear whether I will get a chance to renew my squads and if it'll make the game unbeatable as a result of losing too much of them. It would have been nice to have an option to skip them.. I give a positive score since fans of gamebooks should be pleased with this game, especially if they buy it at a sale price. It's a fairly pleasant, casual experience, but it has a lot of problems. Ideally, I would give a "mixed opinion, 5/10" rate. There is a lot of game-breaking bugs. Bugs that force you to replay parts of the game or turn it off and on to see if they magically fixed themselves. There are design failures as well - most of the choices that you can make, for example, can either reward you or punish you, and while sometimes you can use your own brain to judge the situation and choose the best solution, very often you will feel as if you've encountered a newbie trap - instadeath, load and play again. And the game is not fluent enough (since you can't skip the known encounters after loading) to encourage this backtracking. The battles are very basic, seemingly aimed toward phone users. During the final encounter you can actually win just by using a ship and a balista which you got earlier on, without moving a single group of soldiers. Did nobody test it? The graphics are limited - what IS in the game looks good, but it's definitely a text-based game, not a visual one. The music is fine, but repetitive and limited to a couple of tracks. So, the elephant in the room. The story sucks. It's a revenge story. It's a power fantasy. It's an entitlement simulator. The only twist here are the spare parts of "edgy" drama - you have nightmares, you encounter a lot of violence and damaged lives, your character feels doubts since it wants to lead a massive army what will result in many deaths. I would like it when I was 14. Now it feels too basic for me.A minor spoiler to a minor sidequest: there is a point in the game when you go to a city and you can't enter a restricted area. However, two gorgeous women (twins) let you in just because. And since you are so cool and manly, after a couple of hours one of them just sleeps with you. After the night, turns out she's a princess! Lucky lucky. Maybe her father will support your cause? Damn it, writers, holy smoke it's so dumb. xDNot to say that there is no merit to the game's writing whatsoever. There is some cute folklore hidden in the game, a mix of cultures and tales. Some characters have distinctive personalities and speech patterns. Tricks used to lead the quests are pretty good - nothing is what it seems like, there are twists, turns and various ways to approach things everywhere. You could say that everything kind of works, yet there is no heart in any of it. There are people who can read hundreds of fantasy novels and they don't care if they are a piece of art or just an entertaining craftsmanship. If you don't care either, you won't be bothered by the shortcomings. So yeah, it's a mixed bag. One of those where the devs put too much effort into making game replayable and not enough into polishing a one-time playthrough, what make me not willing to play anymore after all. ; ). Nice little game, with a classic but good revenge story. Do not get it for the battles as they are very basic and just a few ; it's more about the choices you make during the storytelling.A nice buy when on discount !edit : I forgot a main PLUS : the soundtrack, made by the guy from Danheim, is great ! Nordic\/Viking\/Epic, I didn't know about this featuring and got so hyped when I started my first game !
